These are some of my oldest songs, all but one of them written back when I first started writing songs with lyrics. They have been slightly polished and cleaned up and remastered, but are otherwise as they were originally released.
Some of these are outtakes from aborted album projects. I still had a ways to go before I was ready to release these songs properly. Sometimes things take a while to ferment.
This is basically a companion album to Transitions, in which most of these songs were finally redone for modern ears, in a way I’m finally happy with. The artwork, on the other hand, is a reference to my very first album.
The Bandcamp version of this album comes with complete liner notes that go into detail about more of my history.

For this one I was feeling super lazy and just recorded the keyboard and vocals separately in one take, and then I ran the result through a rather overdriven compressor, because I’d heard that compressors were good for audio production and so I should do that.
Frankie Big Face did an amazing cover of this which is what eventually led to the Love and Monsters version, which I consider to be the definitive version of this song.

In 2006 (after having settled on “Sockpuppet” as a band name), I decided to celebrate how far I’d come as a musician since I started doing Song Fight!, and started a project called Plus 5 where I’d remake my first year of Song Fight! songs and release them on the fifth anniversary of the original fight.
I didn’t get through the whole year before losing interest in the project, but due to the nature of this album, I decided that the Plus 5 versions should get remastered and re-released.
It’s funny how in 2006 I thought I’d completed a journey, when clearly I still had a long way to go. I still do, really, but this is at least a step in the right direction.
In any case, the ideas from this directly informed the version I did for Transitions.

The Plus 5 version of Listen Close. For this version I just did it as introverted jazz and just left the angsty lyrics behind.
I didn’t update this one for Transitions because I don’t think the song says anything that needed to be said, and what few interesting musical things happen in it are better covered by the final version of Sunny Again.
This is the remade version of Stronger Than for Plus 5. I wasn’t able to do a full remaster as many of the Logic instruments no longer exist in the basic library and I didn’t have any bounce files that I could reuse, but oh well. This seems good enough.

This song is about me being super annoyed at the transphobia I was experiencing on the Song Fight! forums. I decided to turn it into a way-too-long jazz jam, which I mostly improvised in real-time (aside from the lyrics).
For the recording I used my Yamaha DD-50 drum machine for the backing track, and played my keyboard with the MIDI piped in through my SIDstation, and recorded both simultaneously while improvisationally changing the SIDstation’s patch and parameters.
I guess it’s okay. The “In a [time] or two or three” idea would eventually get reused for Five Minutes; this was basically a lyrical gimmick which I used to mean “eventually, hopefully soon, possibly never.”
It did eventually become the case that I have to sit down to pee, though.

Novembeat is an annual song-a-day challenge where folks from around the world are encouraged to make something musical every day in November.
For 2021’s Novembeat, Sockpuppet decided to stick to a theme: songs that capture the feeling of various coffee grinders.
For much of the month, the band was displaced from their recording studio due to a plumbing emergency, so they were only able to produce around an hour of music over 17 tracks, instead of the original planned two-hour epic coffee journey. It’s probably for the best, since there’s only so many feelings that coffee grinders can evoke.
Many of the tracks from this were also used in the game Hallowed Grounds, which was developed alongside the recording of this album.
Most of these songs are things done for Song Fight! or Song Fight!-adjacent contests, and represent a real turning point in Sockpuppet’s composition and production without forgetting the roots of where this music came from.

I wrote this song the night after I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, based on the then-current understanding of the condition (before new research showed that it’s actually an autoimmune condition), and also about my long-time frustration with just how people who don’t experience chronic pain talk to people who do.

This song was written as a 20th anniversary celebration of the very first Song Fight!.
20 years ago I knew this guy, you probably know the type. His name was Gary or Greg or something, but everyone knew him as Golfpunk. His whole thing was breaking in windows of expensive cars using a golf club to protest the wealth gap or… somethin' like that.
Anyway, he called himself a performance artist, and some rich dude decided it would be funny to give him a Cadillac to drive around, you know, “ironically?” Golfpunk, he changed, man… He changed.

Now that he had a Cadillac of his own he suddenly felt a lot of empathy for the other Cadillac owners and stopped smashing windows. He wanted to smash things, though, so… he took his golf club to the golf course and… he started playing.

He ended up entering into a tournament and won a lot of money, but then his past caught up with him and all these rich assholes, like, sued him for the windows he broke. Anyway, we all kind of lost track of him for a long time, but then a few weeks ago he reached out to me and was like, “Hey, remember me?” And I was like, “Hey, I remember you! Man, Golfpunk! It’s been a long heckin’ time.” Then he kinda went silent.
And then he says to me, “So, um, I’m not Golfpunk anymore. I got married, settled down, had kids… now I’m more of a… golf dad.”
And I was like, “Oh. Huh. Weird.”
And then he said the most offensive thing to me ever:

This was written for Circle of Titles in 2016, when I was assigned the title “Strategies to Live,” which felt super relevant given the then-recent Presidential election which was at odds with my safety as a trans person.

Oh god this album is old and terrible but I still have a soft spot for it.
It’s a collection of songs I made over the course of several years in the late 90s and which I finally released sometime in 2000 (although the exact date is lost to the sands of time). I did everything in Impulse Tracker, and many of the samples were made by interpreting non-sound files as raw PCM data and trimming out interesting-sounding parts of it. Some of the songs were also built from corrupted mod files in my collection. So, it’s arguably an early example of what is now known as “glitch art.”
I only really present it here as a historical artifact. I still listen to it from time to time though, mostly to remind myself of how far I’ve come.
Impulse Tracker doesn’t use traditional musical notation; instead, it divides measures up into fairly arbitrary time periods, and you can place notes within those time periods. For this one I set the time divisions to be 1/5, 1/25, and 1/125 of a measure, and composed a jazz song on it. Little did I know that this song bears an uncanny rhythmic resemblance to Take Five by Dave Brubeck! So everyone thinks I ripped him off, and also think I’m clueless about music theory (which I studied fairly intensely once upon a time) because there’s “no such thing as 5/5 time, surely you mean 5/4” and so on. Oh well, I still like it.
This was also an entry into hornet.org’s Music Contest 5 (the numerical connection being a coincidence). It came in 12th place in the intermediate division. For a while I had that awesome achievement listed on my resumé.
I had a pretty massive collection of .S3M (ScreamTracker 3 Module) files. One day they all got corrupted. Most of them were unrecoverable but one retained the pattern data, but lost all the sample data which was replaced with noise. It sounded cool enough that I kept it around, figuring I could do something neat with it. A few years later I decided to make a new song out of it.
This was an entry in hornet.org’s Music Contest 6. It didn’t do too well, but it was a pretty good representation of how I feel when I have a bunch of pent-up energy which I don’t know how to direct anywhere — I end up just going in circles.
This song is very personal to me. I started composing it without any speakers hooked up, just letting the music come without the sound getting in the way while my partner at the time slept beside me, and I liked it so much that I built up what I think is my best instrumental song ever around it.
One morning I woke up to discover that the power supply on my computer caught on fire (the fan had failed a while ago and I never got around to replacing it). That was just the beginning of what turned out to be a pretty bad day overall. So I wrote this song to cope. This is my second-favorite on the album, behind Softspoken.
For some reason, this is the song which most consistently gets high reviews when other people hear the album, when really I only put it in as filler. Go figure.
Impulse Tracker lets you use any arbitrary file as a sample, even if there’s no header information on it (it lets you specify how to interpret the data, as long as it’s some form of linear PCM). Although all of the songs on this album have at least one sample created by using a non-sound file as a sound in this way, for this song I used nothing else. The best one by far is the drum loop: COMMAND.COM from MS-DOS 6.22.
I originally wrote the first part of this song for an intro for a demogroup which never got off the ground. I think what it came to become a part of was much better anyway.
I needed some way to wrap up the album, so I wrote this quick little chiptune based on motifs from Softspoken and intro, with a few other elements from other songs thrown in.
This song came to me in a dream on a particularly humid morning.
For a while I was obsessed with the workings of the demi-unconscious mind, and was having regular hypnagogic hallucinations due to my somewhat irregular sleep patterns. For this song I stayed up late until I was started to have fatigue-induced hallucinations and then started recording whatever random crap came to mind, then in the morning I pieced it together into this mosaic.

This was another song originally written for a demogroup intro (I forget which group now, but we had this idea that we were going to resuscitate demos for low-spec hardware). The song was originally written for the AdLib soundcard, though I later converted it to digital samples (but used Impulse Tracker’s resonant filters to try to maintain the analog sound).
